The rising burden of chronic illness sets up a very direct set of challenges to health care systems around the world. The problem is that our health care systems are in no way ready for the challenge. The management of chronic illness constitutes nearly 80 percent of our health-care expenditures and traditional Western medicine is not providing good solutions. To take it a step further, the outcome of conventional medicine is often an increasing disability and a diminished quality of life and people become lifetime consumers of medications that were designed to be used for a limited amount of time.
